I wrote En øvelse in the spring that never seemed to begin.
My boyfriend had left me, I had had surgery on my knee and couldn’t walk. I was lying down in my third-floor apartment and watched the trees outside my window turn green. The song grew out of a longing for new beginnings. A longing to go out into spring, among people and trees, and free my body from winter. But even though that didn’t happen, something else did. A hope slowly found its way between the lines in the song. A quiet hope of growing.
I made the music and lyrics and recorded all the sounds in my studio in Oslo. The song is mixed and co-produced by Norwegian noise legend Lasse Marhaug. I can recommend collaborating with him! Stephan Mathieu did the mastering, also a big recommendation for him!

Press release about the song
En øvelse unites Cisser Mæhl’s close-mic voice with a minimal arrangement of strings, warm synths, lo-fi beats and electronics. Her Danish mother tongue rests on top of the fragile, cracking soundscape, bringing to mind Scandinavian artists such as Swedish Stina Nordenstam, Norwegian Hanne Hukkelberg and Icelandic Ólöf Arnalds.
And just as a bonus: I’ve just sent my upcoming album off to be pressed… Many new good things are happening..
