At the beginning of summer, my new trio — with Kai von der Lippe on synths and sampler and Elise Macmillan on violin and vocals — made a live session on a rooftop in Oslo.
I was so nervous before this day. What if the forecast suddenly showed rain? What if the nanny of my son suddenly couldn’t come? Maybe she got sick. Maybe we got sick. And we actually did get sick, but we also got well again just in time. My throat wasn’t good, though. On the day of the recording, I called my good friend and vocal coach Emil Kampp, who guided me through some vocal exercises. I did exactly what he said during the day, and it helped me a lot. Big recommendation for him!
The weather was fine. No rain. I made a big pot of soup for the trio and for dearest Anna Eline Friis Rasmussen who was going to film the session. My son was fine, no messages about sickness so far. So ahead of us were a couple of hours of rigging equipment. All the violins, synthesizers, computers, cables, stands, microphones and cameras went up to the rooftop.
Why do I always underestimate how long it takes to do these practical things? It took a long time. The sun was still shining, but we had to start soon if we wanted to catch the sunset while playing.
But we made it, and here it is. I hope you like it.
